"Kaziranga National Park lies partly in Golaghat District and partly in Nagaon District of Assam."
Kaziranga National Park
The entire Kaziranga National Park area was formed by the alluvial deposits of the Brahmaputra river and its smaller tributaries, which carry a great amount of silt during the rainy season every year.
Kaziranga National Park (KNP), a name known all over the world for the successful conservation of one horned Great Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis). Starting with a dozens of rhinos or so at the beginning of the last century, today the park is home to more than 70% of world's population of Indian Rhinoceros. Being situated within the flood plain of mighty River Brahmaputra, the Kaziranga National Park is a veritable storehouse of biodiversity.
The ongoing ecological succession has produced a mosaic of habitats ranging from sprawling flood plain grasslands to tropical moist deciduous forests whose productivity is maintained at high level by the regular flooding of the park by River Brahmaputra. As a result the park can support species such as Royal Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris), Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus), Wild buffalo (Bubalis bubalis), Swamp Deer (Cervus duvaceli ranjitsinghi), Hog deer (Porcinus axis), Sambar (Cervus unicolor), Wild boar (Sus scrofa) and several species of reptiles, primates, migratory and resident birds. Apart from the exceptional biodiversity values, the park has become a symbol for the dedication of officers & field staff in protecting the wildlife and their habitat against all odds.
The significant conservation values of Kaziranga National Park are: The park is the single largest undivided and representative area of Brahmaputra valley flood plain grassland and forests with associated biodiversity. It is home to the single largest population of Great Indian one horned Rhinoceros, Wild Buffalo (Bubalis bubalis), Eastern Swamp Deer (Cervus duvaceli ranjitsinghi). The Royal Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris) is present at its highest ecological density in the park. A sizeable population of Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus) also thrives within the park. The junction of the Australasia flyway and Indo-Asian flyway exhibits considerable diversity in avifaunal species. Considerable bird diversity due to the park's location at the junction of Australasia flyway and Indo-Asian flyway.
